A mixed development of 58 apartments and 14 retail stores forming, 1953 is a  beautiful preserved slice of the heritage of Singapore at the fringe of the city. Modernized yet maintaining its architectural heritage of Art Deco, merging old and new. This project continues the tradition of the Singapore shophouse archetype with its commercial shops on the ground floor and living spaces above. The ground level is set back from the road, with an overhanging veranda supported by columns on the front, which creates a distinctive five-footway design.

The architectural style of Art Deco is exemplified by the 7 conservation shophouses in 1953 @ Tessensohn. These were so cleverly merged into the mixed development of 1953 that the new part continues almost seamlessly from the old one. The art deco motifs of the shophouses, such as streamlined design and strong horizontal and vertical lines, are picked up and encapsulated. Another typical Art Deco element is the curved corner. In the preserved shophouses, 7 shops and 9 residential units are housed. These form part of Tessensohn’s “Heritage Collection” at 1953. The other seven shops with 40 apartments make up the “Modern Collection” and the 9 “Penthouse Collection”
